The 1987 musical
The 1987 film is the one most people look for. David Irving directed it and wrote the screenplay. Amy Irving plays Katie, the miller's daughter, and Billy Barty plays Rumpelstiltskin, with Clive Revill as the king and Priscilla Pointer as the queen.
It is a musical, with music by Max Robert, and runs 84 minutes. The Cannon Group produced it as one of its fairy-tale films and released it in the US in April 1987. The guide to the 1987 movie covers it in detail.
The 1995 horror film
The 1995 Rumpelstiltskin turns the tale into a horror comedy. Mark Jones directed it, Max Grodénchik plays the imp, and it had a limited release in November 1995. It is a very different film from the musical, so check the year before you watch.
