Is it safe to upload your photo to an AI video generator?
What to check before you upload a photo to an AI video tool, and exactly what this site does with yours: who processes it and when it's deleted.
To make a tip-toe dance video, you hand an AI tool a photo of a real person. It's fair to ask what happens to that photo. Here is what to check on any AI video site, and what AIRumpelstiltskinVideo does.
What to check on any AI video site
- How long it keeps your photo. Look for a clear deletion time in the privacy policy, not just "as long as needed".
- Whether it trains AI on your photo. Some services use uploads to improve their models. A good policy says yes or no plainly.
- Who else sees it. The site may send your photo to an AI provider. The policy should name them and say where they process it.
- Whether you can delete everything. You should be able to delete your account and the videos made from your photos.
- Whether it asks about consent. A responsible tool asks you to confirm that you may use the photo, and refuses photos of children.
What this site does with your photo
- It's deleted after about 24 hours. We use the photo only to make your video, then delete it about 24 hours after upload.
- No training. We don't use your photos or videos to train AI models, and we don't sell your personal information.
- One AI provider. Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (Bailian) makes the video from your photo and a written description of the scene. It processes photos in mainland China.
- You confirm consent. Before a video starts, you tick a box to confirm the photo is yours, or that the adult in it agreed, and we record when. The service is for people aged 18 and over, and photos of children aren't allowed.
- Your videos are yours to delete. Finished videos stay in your library until you delete your account on your profile page. We then delete your personal information within 30 days, except billing records the law requires us to keep.
The Privacy Policy has the full details.
Tips before you upload
- Use a photo of yourself, or ask the person in it first.
- Pick a photo with nothing private in the background, such as documents or a house number.
- Share the finished video as a joke. It's AI-generated, so don't present it as something that really happened.
